I wish I had the courage to step out of my comfort zone sooner to apply for this job earlier.

Advice

Try not to balance academics along with two jobs with demanding work hours. Fortunately, I had the drive to work and gain college credits at a local community college, but it was very exhausting.

What I liked

Loved the attention to detail, working on an assembly line, and the connections I made!

What I wish was different

The only thing, is I wish I was closer(I’m an hour long commute away). Housing would have been cool!

Advice

Make sure you know EVERY part of the assembly line in quality, it helps to know this when an error is found. You can go directly to the section to troubleshoot the error.

GM offering for housing would have been nice, or being closer. I have about an hour commute every day

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions! Don’t let the “big” guys intimidate you. Go in and be the best you, you can be. GM is very particular on their own processes(for a good reason - they work)

Global Purchasing and Supply Chain Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed the challenges that came with working in the supply chain space during a pandemic. GM loses millions of dollars for every day one of its assembly plants is shut down because they're missing a key shipment of parts, so it was up to me and my team to ensure that all of our suppliers were going to be able to keep the supply of parts flowing despite work stoppages, mandated government shutdowns, and other issues that emerged throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

The internship was virtual because of the pandemic; typically the interns all live together in GM housing in Michigan and become really close, but that didn't happen this summer. It was still a good experience, but there wasn't that same sense of community among the interns that we would have received if we were in person.

Advice

Take advantage of your time at GM to get to know all of their different business functions and areas of operation. With a company their size, they have close to every imaginable role, so I would reach out to people across the organization and set up a few virtual coffee chats a week just to learn about their job. I'd encourage anyone who interns for GM, or any other large company, to do the same.

Mostly the shift as I worked 3rd, but it wasn't too bad.

Advice

Be prepared to do mostly the same things over and over again. Find a way to make things fun.

What I liked

General Motors really was committed to providing a mutually beneficial internship experience. My project was challenging and I gained a lot of hands-on industry experience. After working at GM it is clear to me how seriously GM is taking on its mission of Zero Emissions, Zero Congestion, and Zero Fatalities. Also on a personal level, while working at GM I was surprised to see the newfound emphasis and value placed on diversity and progressive thinking. GM is no longer an old-fashioned Detroit automaker, but rather a true innovator in new tech and workforce values.

Electrical Quality Engineer Intern

What I liked

My supervisors were very helpful in exposing me to different parts of manufacturing. They helped me network to other parts of the plant and even to other students in the product department. I had responsibilities that impacted the parts on the automobile. I was able to physically handle the parts and evaluate their function.

What I wish was different

Since my internship was shortened due to COVID-19, there were no big projects to work on. I wish I had a main focus to work on to be able to know the details and the work required of a Quality Engineer.

There was definitely at atmosphere of learning and all of my co-workers wanted to help me learn more and grow as an engineer.

I wanted to be out of state for my co-op in order to experience more of the country but Rochester was still a very good experience.

Student Intern

What I liked

Interning for my second summer at General Motors allowed me to put what I was learning in the classroom to test. General Motors allowed me to grow as a student and person as I was given daily tasks and projects.

What I wish was different

For the past 2 summers, I interned with the GCCX department where I had an amazing experience and took away so many vital lessons and knowledge. During the course of my experience, I did learn that my passion lies within GM, but not within the GCCX department. I know that I will be able to grow and use my skills in another department.

Advice

Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and network with individuals. For the past 2 summers, I have sat down and connected with over 20 GM employees from numerous teams and departments. Through the one-on-ones that I have experienced, I have found which department and team I know where I can best use my skills!

This was my best co-op experience, I actually learned a lot about the ongoing process of tying together engineering on the manufacturing floor and software development.

Not really much, my last co-op experience pales in comparison so since I only have that to compare to I have no complaints.

Never stop learning, you don't know everything and sometimes you might think you know something but there could be something that you are missing.

What I liked

Working for GM was a great opportunity to work in a big industry and be valued for your work and not just a temporary intern. They offered lots of training and paired you up with a mentor who was always willing to help when you were stuck on a project and was overall a great learning experience. You are accountable for getting your work done for your group as well as working with other interns on special projects.

What I wish was different

You are assigned to work in one specific group, which is great over the time period because you learn a lot about that particular section, but I wish there would've been a chance to see what other groups jobs entailed to find out which area you like best when returning.

Advice

Definitely take advantage of the intern events and do as many tours as you can. It provides a lot of exposure to things that even some of the regular employees don't get the chance to do.
