GIS Internship - Temporary

El Paso County is offering a valuable internship opportunity for students or recent graduates pursuing a career in GIS or related technical fields. This position involves supporting GIS operations, performing data collection and manipulation, and responding to internal and external mapping needs. Applicants should be familiar with ESRI platforms, particularly ArcGIS Online, and possess strong interpersonal skills. Hiring Range: $23.550 - $27.000  Hourly


This is a temporary position, working a minimum of 16 hours per week and a maximum of 24 hours per week, Monday-Friday.

 

This position is required to be onsite and is not eligible for remote work.

This position provides technical support for a variety of networked computing systems, geographic information systems (GIS), audio/visual (AV) equipment, and broadcasting equipment throughout the County. Assists in a variety of tasks and activities within a team setting to accomplish operational goals and objectives. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Assists in providing general Information Technology (IT) support, such as installing, configuring, maintaining, upgrading, troubleshooting, and/or repairing end point operating system and application software, hardware, audio/visual, and peripherals.
  • Maintains various spatial features and databases as assigned. Processes requests for coverages, tables, statistics, maps, and feature classes to satisfy internal and external client requests. Employs quality control techniques to protect integrity of County data.
  • Performs data collection tasks necessary to complete internal and external client requirements.
  • Assists County employees by resolving routine problems; may use remote system management tools to gather information, to install new or updated software, or to provide remote end point support.
  • Provides basic network support for end point systems, including network connectivity and configuration.
  • Conducts program, system, and integration testing; analyzes test results to detect errors.
  • Participates in the development of new IT or GIS techniques and standards as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised: This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.
Supervision Received: Receives direct supervision. This classification normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. Frequent direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected.

Qualifications:

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of routine IT help desk best practices and techniques.
  • Must possess strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Must possess initiative, willingness to learn, and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with co-workers and County staff, especially during cross-disciplinary tasks. Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Active participation in an education program pursuing a related degree.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Experience or related coursework with ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, etc.).

Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation drug screen, and physical examination.

Work Conditions:

 

Duties are performed primarily in an office environment. May be required to lift office supplies weighing up to 25 lbs. This is a temporary position typically not to exceed five months.
