DEPARTMENT: 801 Charlotte, Wichita Service Center, or BNSF Building

LOCATION: Kansas City, MO

                              Topeka, KS

                              Wichita, KS

PAY RANGE: $22.00 - $26.00 / Hour

 

Internship Position for Summer 2026.

 

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Other hours as required)

Intern Description:

We are seeking a motivated Network Technician Intern to join our IT team, assisting in the maintenance and optimization of our network infrastructure. The intern will gain hands-on experience with Cisco equipment, and various tools supporting the monitoring, troubleshooting, automation and enhancement of network systems critical to our electric utility operations.

 

Job tasks include but not limited to:

  • Assist in configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting Cisco routers, switches, and firewalls under the guidance of senior technicians.
  • Monitor network performance using various tools to identify and report anomalies or potential issues.
  • Utilize Splunk to analyze log data, generate reports, and assist in identifying security or performance trends.
  • Document network configurations, processes, and troubleshooting steps to maintain accurate records.
  • Collaborate with the IT team to implement network upgrades, patches, and security measures.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on network optimization and infrastructure improvements.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university or technical program in one of the following or a related technical field: Computer Science, Network Engineering, Information Technology, or Information Systems. Must have a basic understanding of network concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and switching). Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interest in leaning network monitoring and analytics tools and techniques. 

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Must have a basic understanding of network concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, and switching). 
  • Must be dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented and have excellent organizational and proofreading skills. 
  • Must possess the ability to work and communicate effectively with other company personnel.
  • Exposure to Cisco IOS or other network operating system preferred. 

 

Working Conditions:

Normal office working conditions with the occasional need to lift and move equipment up to 50lbs. Occasional travel to field locations and on-site plant work which require the ability to stand for long periods of time, walk up and down flights of stairs, and wear required personal protective equipment.
