This serves as the Senior Accessibility Specialist for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) in performing complex professional and advisory functions in application services and performing research and analysis on assistive technology, software tools, and best practices to build and maintain an enterprise program to promote, educate, and ensure the Agency’s compliance with the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA).
In this role, you will develop and implement comprehensive training and communications to educate technical staff and technology users on IITAA requirements.
In addition, you will serve as a designated lead-worker in assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance and training to assigned staff, and advising supervisor on staff work performance.

Essential Functions
- Under administrative direction, serves as the Senior Accessibility Specialist for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) performing complex professional and advisory functions in application services and performing research and analysis on assistive technology, software tools, and best practices to build and maintain an enterprise program to promote, educate, and ensure the Agency’s compliance with the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA).
- Develops and implements comprehensive training and communications to educate technical staff and technology users on IITAA requirements and how to comply including evaluating and selecting hardware and software, implementing technology, and using technology.
- Serves as a designated lead worker.
- Keeps abreast of new developments in the information technology field by continuing education through online training platforms, meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences to increase familiarity with and remain current on products, vendors, techniques, and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to four (4) years of college with course work in computer science or directly related fields.
- Requires three (3) years of professional experience in application services or a related Information Technology field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) years of professional experience promoting, educating, and ensuring compliance with Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act (IITAA) standards or similar accessibility standards.
- Three (3) years of professional experience using assistive technology such as ZoomText, Job Access with Speech (JAWS), Nonvisual Desktop Access (NVDA), and Dragon, accessibility tools such as Accessibility Insights, Axe, and SiteImprove, and best practices such as Windows High Contrast and Keyboard commands, to assess compliance with IITAA and improve digital accessibility.
- Three (3) years of professional experience monitoring and reporting on compliance with IITAA or similar accessibility standards, including analyzing accessibility data, preparing reports or dashboards, and providing actionable guidance or recommendations to address identified deficiencies.
- Three (3) years of professional experience developing and delivering accessibility training and communications tailored to technical and non-technical audiences, with a focus on educating users on IITAA or similar digital accessibility standards.
- Three (3) years of professional experience creating user-centric documentation such as job aids, user guides, knowledge articles, and chatbot intents to support accessibility compliance.
- Two (2) years of professional experience reviewing and analyzing Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATS) and monitoring vendor progress toward accessibility compliance.
- Two (2) years of experience managing or coordinating accessibility-related contracts, licensing, or procurement processes.
- Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with cross-functional teams, including IT, procurement, legal, and executive leadership, to integrate accessibility into enterprise systems and services.
- Ability to coordinate and lead the activities of team members to achieve operational goals, including assigning and reviewing work, providing technical guidance and mentorship, and contributing to performance evaluations and staff development.
