TITLE: Data Management Intern
LOCATION: Remote

DURATION: 15-20 hours per week
POSITION REPORTS TO: Data Specialist or Data Quality and Assurance Coordinator
BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education, and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.
SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:
The Data Management Intern will support IRC’s Elizabeth, New Jersey office in data
management – including data entry, data quality assurance, data analysis, and improving data infrastructure designs. This is an entry-level data management position. Manual data entry is part of the internship — it’s a great way to build accuracy and get comfortable working with our data systems. This internship has both practical and theoretical learning goals. 70% of working hours will include assisting with data management tasks, particularly data entry, assuring data accuracy, and developing data entry automation processes. 30% of working hours will be dedicated to a project developed by the intern in conjunction with the intern’s supervising data staff person. This internship is highly independent. Successful interns are self-motivated learners who actively solve problems as they arise. The Data Management Intern may learn the details of data management across many teams in the IRC NJ office, including Resettlement, Intensive Case Management, Housing, Health and Wellness, Intake, Refugee Cash Assistance, Assistance for Families and Older Adults, Economic Empowerment, Adult Education, and Youth Education.
This role is remote and 15-20 hours a week. This position is unpaid. An applicant needs work authorization in the USA to qualify. (CPT and OPT are acceptable.)

Data Management
- Data entry

Project
- Developed by the intern in coordination with Data Specialist
- Must include data analysis and reference humanitarian work
- Intern will complete supplementary educational materials on data philosophy and ethics

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Interns will learn the foundations of data management, including data system
maintenance, data entry, and data analysis - Interns will develop an ability for self-guided work
- Interns will reflect on the role of data in international humanitarian relief
- Interns will learn the basics of data philosophy
- Interns will reflect on the role of ethics in data management
REQUIREMENTS:
- Reliable
- Passionate about helping migrants entering the USA
- Interest in data
- Accuracy and consistency with work
- Moderate to advanced Microsoft Excel abilities
- Fluency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint
- Self-guided and self-motivated
- Willing to learn new software programs and data analysis tools
- If remote or hybrid, access to reliable internet, a computer, and video call technology (laptops can be provided to an intern only while in the office)
- If remote or hybrid, ability to download and install software to complete remote work
- If remote or hybrid, ability to attend meetings via video call during Eastern Standard Time (NYC time)
- Willing to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts
- Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
- Cannot be a current IRC client
