Intern - GIS Analyst

Be a part of a team making a difference in Virginia through rail transportation initiatives that will double passenger rail service. The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is responsible for promoting, sustaining, and expanding the availability of passenger and commuter rail services in the Commonwealth, including all administrative and fiduciary responsibilities for Virginia's state-supported passenger rail services. VPRA administers a combined $4.8 billion operating and capital budget to accomplish these objectives. The financial accounting of the Authority is performed on a full accrual basis, and an annual independent audit is completed.

Job Summary

The GIS Analyst Intern will be dedicated to the Operations department, providing an entry point for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in geography, data science, or geospatial information systems from an accredited university. The candidate for the position will be able to apply their academic background to gain firsthand experience in the various aspects of Infrastructure Asset Management, Passenger Rail Infrastructure Projects, Data Management, and Analysis.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Asset Management Senior Manager and other leaders, the GIS Analyst Intern will:

  • Support the preparation and visualization of railroad infrastructure data, including survey and CADD data.
  • Work in ESRI software and geodatabases to improve the usability of VRPA's asset data.
  • Clean and prepare asset data for use in geospatial applications.
  • Update geospatial applications in ESRI to improve the visualization and interpretation of asset data.
  • Support improvements to geospatial applications, in ArcGIS Hub and/or ArcGIS Experience Builder.
  • Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls.
  • Research, collect, and analyze asset data, as applicable.
  • Assist with meeting minutes, report writing, and administrative tasks.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with management.
  • Develop a Capstone project as a presentation to the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Handles other work responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience

Required Education:

  • Must be actively pursuing a relevant degree at an accredited educational institution. Relevant undergraduate coursework includes geospatial information systems, data analytics, data science or spatial data science, spatial statistics, geography, cartography or geovisualization, and GIS software.
  • Must have at least 2 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a junior status at minimum.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Preferred Experience:

  • Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office software suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with spatial data science, database management (SQL), Python/R scripting, and data visualization in practical GIS applications.
