Intern Description:

The Evergy Energy Solutions department helps customers manage energy use through energy efficiency, demand response, and other customer-focused programs. We combine program management, financial and performance reporting, regulatory support, and new technology solutions to improve affordability and grid reliability.

This internship offers hands-on experience supporting the business operations, financial reporting, and performance management of customer energy programs. The intern will work closely with program managers, accounting, finance, regulatory, and analytics teams to support budgeting, forecasting, accrual tracking, program reporting, compliance activities, and day-to-day program operations. This role is ideal for students interested in the intersection of business management, accounting, finance, data analysis, and the energy industry. The intern may also take ownership of a defined project or pilot initiative with guidance from the team.

Job tasks include but not limited to:

  • Support program managers in monitoring energy efficiency, demand response, and other customer programs by tracking performance metrics, identifying trends, and coordinating follow-up activities.
  • Assist with monthly financial reporting activities, including budget tracking, accrual support, invoice review, forecasting, and reconciliation of program expenditures.
  • Prepare and validate reporting used by accounting, finance, regulatory, and business stakeholders to support decision-making and compliance requirements.
  • Research and analyze program performance, financial results, business processes, regulatory requirements, and market trends.
  • Document and improve business processes, controls, and procedures to support reporting accuracy, program compliance, and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings, track decisions and action items, and support special projects or pilot initiatives.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Candidates must be pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Business Analytics, Economics, Management Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field. A strong interest in financial analysis, business operations, reporting, and the energy industry is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an ability to work with data to support business decisions.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and organize information to support business decisions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; experience with Power BI or other reporting tools is helpful.
  • Interest in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, accounting processes, business analytics, program operations, regulatory compliance, or performance reporting.
  • Ability to review, reconcile, and validate information for accuracy and clearly communicate findings to business partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of teams and stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable managing multiple priorities with attention to detail.

Working Conditions:

The intern position typically involves remote work on Mondays and Fridays, with in-person work required from Tuesday through Thursday in an office setting. Flexibility is key, as work locations may change based on needs, and participation in electric vehicle promotion events during evenings or weekends may be necessary. Evergy operates out of Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City, with service centers across the territory, so meetings may occasionally occur at different locations.
