Data Governance Internship

Data Services & Data Governance Intern

Position Overview

The Data Services & Data Governance Intern will support data management, reporting, and governance initiatives by assisting with data collection, analysis, validation, and documentation activities. This internship provides hands-on experience with data quality practices, business intelligence tools, and data governance principles while contributing to projects that support organizational decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the collection, organization, analysis, and reporting of data from various sources.
  • Support data quality efforts by identifying missing, inconsistent, or inaccurate data and documenting findings.
  • Participate in data management and governance initiatives, including data documentation, standards development, and process improvement activities.
  • Conduct research and analysis to identify trends, patterns, and business insights.
  • Help create reports, dashboards, presentations, and other data-driven deliverables.
  • Collaborate with business and technical staff to understand data requirements and support organizational objectives.
  • Review and follow established data governance policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to team members and stakeholders in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Assist with special projects related to data services, reporting, research, and process improvement.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Data Analysis

  • Basic understanding of data collection, analysis, and reporting concepts.
  • Ability to interpret information and identify meaningful trends or insights.
  • Familiarity with analytical tools such as Microsoft Excel, SQL, Power BI, Python, or similar technologies is preferred.
  • Ability to connect data findings to business needs and decision-making.

Data Quality & Governance

  • Interest in data management, data quality, and data governance practices.
  • Understanding that reliable data requires validation, consistency, accuracy, and accountability.
  • Ability to review data sources, identify discrepancies, and document issues appropriately.
  • Awareness of data security, privacy, and compliance considerations.

Problem Solving & Learning

  • Strong curiosity and willingness to learn new systems, processes, and technologies.
  • Ability to research unfamiliar topics, review documentation, and apply learned concepts.
  • Resourceful approach to problem-solving and seeking guidance when needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.

Communication Skills

  • Ability to explain technical concepts in clear, business-friendly language.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to present data findings, risks, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Effective collaboration skills and willingness to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Coursework or experience involving data analysis, reporting, research, or information management.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and data visualization/reporting tools is desirable.
  • Interest in data governance, data quality, business intelligence, or enterprise data management.

The Data Governance Internship will be housed in the TWDB IT Data Services Division. Duration will be 12 weeks in length and offer 20 hours per week with a minimum compensation of $20.00 per hour.
