Economic Development Intern (Spring)

Job Title: Economic Development Intern 

Status: Exempt 

Reports To: Director of Community Strategy 

Work Location: Salt Lake City, UT 84111 

Job Type: Part time, 10-20 hours/week 

Duration: January 17th – April 19th, 2024 

Pay: $15/Hour 

Schedule: Day shift 

Travel requirement: Some travel may be requested 
 

Summary: The Economic Development Internship is structured to provide a student with transferable skills and experience to progress professionally and personally. The intern will be involved in priority initiatives and gain experience working with a diverse set of stakeholders across multiple sectors (state and local government, private business and community organizations). The intern will also gain professional experience by attending EDCUtah events when available. The goal is to gain an authentic experience working for and serving one of the fastest growing states across the U.S.  

 

The Economic Development Internship is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students seeking careers in city planning/management, policy and politics, economic and community development, urban development, real estate, business, QAMO, or a related field. The program is designed for ambitious individuals seeking to build a strong resume and to impact our community. 

 

You might be a good fit if: You are a self-starter, can manage multiple projects simultaneously, and can learn “a little about a lot” quickly. You are highly professional, a skilled networker, and an excellent communicator. 

 

Specific initiatives in which the Economic Development Intern may be involved include:  

Business Development 

  • Support the business development team by assembling Request for Information (RFI) responses and updating maps to ensure equitable community participation. 
  • Compile and prepare data for various meetings. 
  • Organize/Schedule Know the Customer interviews while recording interview outcomes for reporting purposes. 
  • Support Global Strategy & Outreach preparation with industry related insights that are critical to effective campaign creation. 
  • Attend meetings with private investors and local government officials such as economic directors, mayors, and other elected appointees. 

Research 

  • Contribute to specialized reports for diverse stakeholder needs. 
  • Assist research team in compiling profile data for various conferences and other needs. 
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to formalize API’s and coding using Python and R. 
  • Collect January cost of living data for the four Utah metropolitan areas. 

Other Key Responsibilities 

  • Attend staff and other meetings as time permits. 
  • Participate in additional projects and activities as needed. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

Undergraduate students currently enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate institution and major/concentration in Economics, Business Administration, Political Science, Geography, Planning/ Urban Studies, or another related field. 

Preferred Qualifications 

Previous experience in project management, account management, sales management, or business development
