Baseball Analytics Official Scorer Internship

The Orange County Riptide, a collegiate wood bat summer baseball team playing games at the Great Park in Irvine, California, seeks interns with strong knowledge and understanding of the rules and scoring of baseball along with strong math and analytical skills with respect to the game of baseball.

Please Note: This un-paid internship position will require your attendance at home games in Irvine, Calif. Qualified candidates will need to ensure they have housing available from June through early August 2024.

Summer interns attending college outside of the Orange County, Calif. area must make their own living arrangements for the summer. The OC Riptide cannot provide housing for out-of-the-area interns.

Interns chosen for this position will need strong critical thinking skills, ability to work in a demanding environment, take direction easily and quickly, willingness to work nights and weekends and have a passion for the sport of college baseball along with statistical analysis.

Learning Objectives:

  • Baseball Analytics / Official Scorers will learn and master the use of PointStreak, the official real-time statistics and sports league management system used by the OC Riptide and the California Collegiate League.
  • Interns will learn to utilize player past performances to assist the Director of Baseball Operations and head coach to set optimal line-ups to capitalize on player strengths and tendencies.
  • Interns will learn to use analytics to properly scout opponents to recognize trends and tendencies.
  • By the end of the internship, students should have gained exceptional knowledge in baseball analytics and official scoring of the game of baseball. Should interns pursue career advancement in sports, additional networking within the Southern California sports entertainment industry is available.

In lieu of compensation, academic credit is available for this internship. Academic credit is not guaranteed and is a dependent upon your school’s requirements and terms. Check with your school's Internship Coordinator BEFORE accepting the hiring offer to determine if this position satisfies the criteria for receiving academic credit.

Because this position requires attendance at home and road games, (40 games spanning from June through early August) applicants are expected to work four (4) to five (5) hours per game. This includes pre-game, in-game and post-game analysis of data, charting, acting as the official scorer for assigned games, providing broadcast team with useful data and other duties assigned by the Director of Baseball Operations and head coach. Candidates chosen for this position will work within a team atmosphere with two (2) to three (3) others. Road game assignments will be divided equally within the department staff. Any lodging and per diem costs while on road game assignments will be provided by the team.

Ideal candidates will have knowledge of how to keep score of a baseball game, make quick judgements on the fly during a game, knowledge of the PointStreak scoring system and an understanding of how to take statistical data and translate it to meaningful information to be used by coaches and the Director of Baseball Operations.

Duties for the Analytics & Official Scorer will consist of, but not be limited to:

Responsibilities

• Reports directly to the Head Coach & Director of Baseball Operations

• Officially score home games

• Gather baseball statistics and provide analysis

• Compile advanced statistical methods and reports

• Design and test predictive models

• Interpret data to assist team with player decisions

• Attend all home games and some road games

Preferred Skills

• Familiarity with PointStreak software recommended

• Strong math and analytical skills

• Strong knowledge of baseball including rules and scoring
