Mass General Brigham-Harvard Medical School-TechFoundation Remote Data Science 2025 Summer Internship Program (national/virtual). Apply your academic and theoretical understanding of STEM to real world medical problems and world-class research. This unique, national, 100% virtual/remote summer internship pairs aspiring pre-meds/life science/data science rising college seniors and recent graduates with world-class principal investigators (PIs) from Harvard Medical School faculty and the Mass General Brigham Hospitals (including Dana Farber Cancer Center). Past participants have matriculated to Ivy League medical schools, R1 top life science and data science/CS doctoral programs. In addition, many participants have seen their contributions recognized by being named co-authors of articles published in significant, peer-reviewed journals. Rolling Admissions (see below). This is a paid internship.
Highly Competitive. As the only data science medical research summer internship program available nationally on a remote basis, this program is highly competitive.
Background. Born from the COVID-19 disruptions to traditional summer research internships, the Brigham Education Institute - TechFoundation Remote Data Science Internship gives bright, aspiring life science students the opportunity to experience medical research and apply data analytical skills learned in classes to real-world medical research. The internship has been designed to provide participants with an 8–10-week experience (100% remote/virtual) working with top-tier researchers from Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital-Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute on real medical research projects.
Harvard/Mass General Brigham. Each participant will be partnered with a Principal Investigator based at Harvard Medical School and/or the Mass General Brigham Hospital (a teaching hospital of HMS). Projects will include data validation, analysis, and project management and will directly relate to research for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals. Participants will receive IRB training and certification at the start of the program.
AI-optional. For some students with AI experience, there are projects involving LLMs, computer vision, and advanced statistical analysis. Most projects do not require or involve AI-skills or techniques.
Stipend & Training. In addition to a stipend of $5,000, participants will be provided online training in data science analytics and professional support (limited) from data scientists/programmers to advance their knowledge of data analysis and related programming. Experience with Python (or R) is a plus, but is not required.
Medical School Admissions Counseling. In addition to the online training and professional support, each participant will receive at least one mentoring session with Principal Investigators who have significant experience in the medical school admissions process. These sessions may include reviewing participant’s professional interests, professional plans, and overall advice regarding medical school admissions.
Qualifications. The program is open to exceptionally strong rising seniors and recent graduate students in STEM programs, broadly. In addition:
- Participants must be located in the USA for the duration of the internship, and must be either US citizens or have a valid US work authorization.
- Participants must be available for a 35-40-hour work week between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET.
- Participants may not hold another full-time position. In addition, any other work or academic commitments (summer research at your home institution) must be fully disclosed.
- Participants are required to attend weekly cohort and lab meetings (all virtual).
Application Schedule/Rolling. Applications are welcomed through Handshake and will be processed on a rolling basis from October 8 - January 6, 2025. Applicants will be notified whether they will receive an interview during the third week of January, and decisions will be rendered in February and March. The internship will run between June 9 - August 8, depending on the individual schedules of those involved (taking PI vacation, travel schedules, etc., into account). While some slots will be reserved for later applicants, this highly competitive program will award the stipend/internships on a ROLLING BASIS. Therefore, early applications from exceptionally strong applicants will be favored.
Non-discrimination. All applicants will receive consideration for this internship without regard to race, sex, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, or on the basis of disability.
