Essential Job Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of a full-time salaried employee designated as his or her sponsor, the student Intern performs work that is intended to provide the needed experience for a career substantially similar to that of the sponsor.  This work should provide ample opportunity to learn and should bring value to the company. 

 

As an Intern with our Product Management team, the Intern-Data Science will create and operationalize Machine Learning model(s) to predict important factors impacting container terminal yard optimization. Reporting to the Optimization Group Product Manager, the intern will work closely with other team members including Product Owners, Software Engineers, and Data Analysts to gain an understanding of the container terminal industry to enable identification and implementation of operationally valuable predictions. The Intern will also work alongside mentors and collaborate within a group setting. 

  • Create and operationalize cloud-based Machine Learning model(s) which predict factors that impact container terminal yard optimization.
  • Assist in analyzing large datasets to uncover insights and trends relevant to the maritime and logistics industries.
  • Work with internal teams to develop machine learning models and data-driven solutions for container terminal decking, container volumes, vessel reliability, and other factors impacting container terminal optimization.
  • Help clean, preprocess, and visualize data from various sources, including sensor data, shipping records, and operational metrics.
  • Support the development and deployment of optimization algorithms and generative AI solutions to improve supply chain efficiencies, reduce costs, and enhance safety.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of data pipelines and reporting dashboards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop innovative approaches for solving business challenges using data-driven methods.
  • Maintain punctuality arriving to and departing from work, according to the schedule agreed upon with the student intern sponsor for that school term.
  • Communicate with stakeholders regarding project work and departmental needs.
  • Develop relationships with your sponsor’s peers and manager that can lead to learning opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Compensation Range

$25.00 - 28.00 per hour

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Actively pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited university in data science, computer science, statistics, operations research, industrial engineering, or applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above is preferred.
  • Students should have completed relevant coursework in courses such as Machine Learning and AI, Data Structures and Algorithms, Statistical Modeling and Probability, Optimization and Operations Research, Database Management and SQL, Python or R for Data Science, and/or Cloud Computing and Big Data Processing, as examples.
  • Prior related experience is strongly desired through academic projects, internship roles or volunteer positions with machine learning projects, real-world data, open source contributions, Cloud and DevOps exposure, etc.
  • Knowledge and/or prior experience with supply chain analytics, logistics technology, transportation modeling and/or operations research is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well within a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated individual with a desire to be continually challenged.
  • Availability to work business hours, Monday – Friday during summer months.
  • The student intern is expected to be able to learn and repeat the tasks assigned by their sponsor.
  • Full-time attendance at an accredited college or university, in pursuit of a degree consistent with the student internship role required.

 

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to computer screens.
  • Required hybrid work schedule, at least 2 days/week in office.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
