SpartanNash

Grocery Night Stock

June - August 2020 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I appreciated the lackadaisical elements given that it was a night shift and although there was a plethora of tasks to do, none of it felt necessary strenuous in a harmful sense. I have fantastic coworkers who made the experience incredibly entertaining to work at and management was generally understanding to the individual circumstances of its employees and was more than willing to create adequate accommodations for those who aptly filled out specific requests and other such forms with advanced notifications involved logistically.

What I wish was different

Personally I wished there was further training during the initial stages since there was an archaic system that was utilized for the employees on the computers that registered me as having an incomplete status on training weeks after I had already been an employee. Similarly, even though management themselves were quite compassionate, other departments actively antagonized certain coworkers of mine with disabilities and there was a noticeably limited human resources sector to appeal to regarding these egregious scenarios.

Advice

I would definitely say that this job involves lots of physical attributes necessary to work with given that it is a stocking and logistics position that requires manual labor throughout most of it. Thankfully, the store has an incredibly streamlined and comprehensive break program that adequately divvies up working periods into reasonably digestible portions that can be flexibly managed throughout the shift. Customers are generally not inquisitive either so those with social anxiety issues might find this position assuaging their preferences.

Communications Intern

May 2022 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

This internship allowed me to grow my education exponentially. I was given many tasks during the summer that made a direct impact on SpartanNash as a whole, and allowed me to learn corporate processes to take with me into the future. Each Associate at SpartanNash embodies the People First culture daily. The internship program itself allows for each intern to get to know each other and learn the business from every aspect. I am so glad this company gives opportunities for growth and to stay in the intern position more than just a summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had a bit more training at the beginning, and more communication leading up to the beginning date of the internship program. I felt very underprepared, and while being thrown in is great sometimes from a learning standpoint, it can also be overwhelming for those of us who have never been in a corporate setting before.

Advice

Go into it open-minded! This is an incredible company and being ready to jump right in would be the best advice I could give. At SpartanNash, they truly treat interns as a real part of the team. Use this internship to help advance your career - there is a possibility of staying on part time!

HR Supply Chain Intern

June 2022 • Byron Center, MI

What I liked

This internship provided me with real-world experience in the HR and Supply Chain field. I was given many tasks throughout the summer that challenged me but also forced me to learn and grow as a young professional. I had fantastic coworkers who made my experience nothing but the best. They cared about my personal life just as much as my professional life which really showed the People First Culture SpartanNash employees embodies.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more communication leading up to the internship. I felt very underprepared on my first week, since I was not given information about where to go, who to talk to, or what I would be doing until the day prior. Another piece of advice I will suggest would be to connect with the other interns earlier in the summer!

Advice

SpartanNash has a great mix of people who want to get to know you. Get to know you managers and other coworkers on a personal level because have tons of life and professional experience and would be more than happy to share it with you.

My managers were and are still interested in my career aspirations and take that into account. I can see myself excelling at SpartanNash and making even more valuable connections.

Internal Audit Intern

May 2022 • Byron Center, MI

What I liked

Since day one my team (Internal Audit) treated me like a coworker instead of an intern. The team gave me real work to do by throwing me in on some audits to first observe, but then had me help conduct and analyze testing. I was treated to multiple meals including sushi, tai, pub, and the list goes on. The team cared about my personal life just as much as they cared about the quality of my work.

What I wish was different

I wish I would of had more connection to the other interns instead of meeting them near the end of the summer internship.

Advice

Get ready to learn and don't be afraid to ask questions. SpartanNash wants to develop their interns.

Supply Chain Intelligence Intern

May - August 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

SpartanNash really invests in their interns. We did so many professional development events and lunch and learns with top management in the company. The interns also got to pitch solutions to a real-time company opportunity to the executive board and other top management and employees. I couldn't have asked for a better internship experience.

What I wish was different

My direct manager was not very involved in my project and really unprofessional, but my mentor was fantastic so it made up for it.

Talk to other interns! Create a groupme and invite everyone out for dinner or bowling or drinks. My experience was fantastic because of the people I worked with and the relationships I made. Just like the rest of life!
