Electrical Engineering College Technical Intern

May - August 2022 • Sterling, VA

What I liked

I loved the work campus. There was a lot of activity for different areas of the company, and there were plenty of chances to explore that activity. Some very talented people work here that you can learn from. Everyone values their work.

What I wish was different

The work itself could have been more interesting. I wish there had been more push for exploring outside my immediate team because I felt stuck in a silo.

Advice

It can be seen as a rat race at this location and, generally, Northern Virginia - Maryland. That said, most people you see will not interact with interns of their own volition. You'll have to push for a conversation so do that in the first couple of weeks to set a precedent.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2023 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

NGC being a large organization, it provided a lot of resources for overall development. Not only did I learn how software engineers work in a full time job, I actually made contributions that affected real world projects. I had lots of opportunities to collaborate between different disciplines that cover product development. My managers provided me with all round mentoring and help me make connections.

What I wish was different

I liked the internship experience to be multi faceted and all encompassing but maybe there should be an avenue for specific experiences.

Advice

It broadened my understanding of writing code outside of just college projects. Definitely recommend.

College Intern Technical

June - August 2023 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

My time during the internship gave me valuable insight on what it is like to be a mechanical engineer.

What I wish was different

I personally had things going on besides the internship so I did not have much time to make connections with other interns. More opportunities for intern networking would have been nice.

Advice

Do not be afraid to put yourself out there. What you do during the short time may be remembered and rewarded depending on the amount of effort you put in.

Field Engineering Intern

June - August 2023 • Linthicum Heights, MD

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work directly with industry projects and assist in company products

What I wish was different

Wish I had been placed on a better project with more opportunities, unfortunately the project I was working on was coming to a close and did not leave me much work.

College Intern Technical

June - August 2023 • Sunnyvale, CA

What I liked

Very friendly coworkers, relaxed but professional environment, a lot of freedom to work on projects that are interesting and check out other technical teams. Flexible work schedule.

What I wish was different

A little more organization regarding project assignments, some teams didn't seem fully prepared to take on an intern. However, this was an encouragement to be proactive in taking on projects so ended up as a good thing for me.

Advice

Be your own advocate when trying to find things to work on If it interests you, let people know.

Finance Intern - NGI

May - August 2023 • Magna, UT

What I liked

Northrop Grumman was very prepared for my arrival. They had a project ready for me, were ready to introduce me to my manager and teammates, and had lots of learning material to help me.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more opportunities to meet other interns and connect with other departments.

Advice

Take time to introduce yourself to other people. Company culture isn't very open, so few people will introduce themselves to you, but they will be more than happy to help you once you reach out to them.

Structural Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

My manager ensured I had plenty of meaningful work to occupy me. He also ensured I was challenged and learning the entire summer.

What I wish was different

I do wish I had the opportunity to do more structural analysis. I did several projects, but a decent portion involved coding, which isn't my interest.

Advice

Take the opportunity to network inside and outside of your direct team. Everyone that I can across at NGC was willing to take the time to talk to me about there experience and offer guidance in my career path ahead. Take the time to put in meaningful effort and ask all the questions. They know you don't know everything coming in, but they are 100% willing to teach you what you need to know.

Technical Intern

May - July 2021 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

The people were really nice. This was my second internship within mass properties and everyone was proud that I came back for another summer. I also was doing meaningful work so I really felt like I belonged within the group.

What I wish was different

The first day was kind of a trainwreck. The first day for interns wasn't really organized in the best way.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Gilbert, AZ

What I liked

There was a really great culture at the Gilbert Campus! I also liked walking through the manufacturing building to see what the company was physically working on at the time.

What I wish was different

Honestly, nothing! The work-life balance was great. The pace is a little slow as an intern, but once I started learning more, I found more work to do. Having a great mentor to work alongside with made a huge difference, too.

Advice

Be patient! Onboarding takes a few days, and you will spend the first couple of weeks in training.

Propulsion Engineering Intern

January 2020 • Chandler, AZ

What I liked

I liked the community and the variety of experiences that the company provided for their interns. This past summer, NG also hosted plenty of events with interns to be able to interact together and learn more about opportunities and the vision of the company.

What I wish was different

I wish there was greater outreach of mentorship to the interns joining on last summer. I was lucky to have great mentorship when I was first onboarded, but it seems like my department got much more busy recently and couldn't provided that same guidance to the new interns.

Advice

Always be willing to say YES! The opportunities are fun and make a difference, either for the department or for the program that you contribute to.

I liked the fact that I was directly working with engineers assembling the James Webb Space Telescope. I loved the fact that I was working on a piece of equipment that will re-write the history books.
