Industrial Engineering Intern
May - August 2019 • Woodland Hills, CA
What I liked
My summer internship at Northrop Grumman was a very eye-opening and exciting experience. As my first internship, it allowed me to fully be able to connect all the concepts I've learned in school to real-world projects and situations.
What I wish was different
Wish there was a more organized structure with my various assigned projects, and more collaboration would be beneficial.
Advice
Don't be afraid to speak up and ask questions! As an intern, everyone understands that you're not supposed to know everything right away, and they are always more than willing to clarify things and help. Show initiative and stay open-minded to any new projects/experiences.

College Intern Technical
May - August 2019 • Redondo Beach, CA
What I liked
I enjoyed the project I was assigned to over the summer. I was working with the STRAFE program, which aims to develop a laser pod to fit under a fighter jet to shoot missiles out of midair. I was tasked to design and develop a 3D scale model of the laser pod, and the engineers were highly impressed with the final product. I also enjoyed the ability to work closely with engineers on a project of this caliber, and the networking opportunities this internship provided were unparalleled.
What I wish was different
I wish I had the opportunity to see other projects. Not that I did not enjoy working on my summer project, but I would have liked the opportunity to see what else was happening within the company location early in the summer, and possible lined up opportunities to work in a different area on a different project this past summer.
Advice
Apart from doing your work, I would advise you to tag along with other engineers if they invite you somewhere. I had the opportunity to visit external manufacturers, I had the opportunity to sit in on weekly design review meetings, I was able to learn about another project my assignment manager was working on, and more. You're only there for three months, so take every opportunity to see and learn as much as you can about everything that goes on there, while you have the opportunity.

Electrical Engineering Hardware Intern
May - August 2019 • Baltimore, MD
What I liked
I got to work with some very cool lab equipment and learned a ton about the field of RF that isn't explicitly covered in classes.
What I wish was different
Because the company is so massive, there were no specific projects assigned to me so I had to do whatever work was available, which was sometimes derating or data collection instead of interesting engineering projects.
Advice
Northrop is a great first internship as it allows for tons of experience in all different fields. Make sure you take advantage of its massive corporate nature by talking to people outside your department and asking what's involved in the type of engineering they do.
