Definitely participate in as many events as you possibly can. If your program does not provide enough events, see what other interns in other programs are up to and talk to your manager about switching around. They're very accommodating and there is a lot of room to explore within the company.

Embedded Software Engineering Intern

What I liked
The ability to learn about many of the difficulties of embedded software engineering, such as synchronization and data races. This was a very challenging internship, but I learned a lot.
What I wish was different
I wish I interacted with other interns more often. I interacted with them on a weekly basis, but there were no other interns on my team. This was nice because I got all of the work, but it became lonely at points, especially compared to working with 4 other interns last summer.
Advice
Don't be afraid to say that you aren't following what's going on. I often found myself asking questions that I felt I should know the answer, but that's the only way I learned.

What I liked
I really loved having the opportunity to advance my Computer Aided Design skills. I was also able to take advantage of the free SolidWorks training in which I worked toward receiving my certification in that particular software that I was using on the job. My favorite part was being assigned a design task in which I had the flexibility of making a Isolator fixture in Solid Works and then being able to 3D print the final design.
What I wish was different
I wish I had one continuous project instead of multiple tasks in which I finished in about a day or so.
Advice
The biggest advice I would give is to not be afraid to ask for work and to be open about every assignment even if it is small because you can still learn new skills from smaller tasks. Also, make sure to network while interning! There are so many people who have been in the exact same position and would love to give tips to being successful within whatever career field you want to pursue.

What I liked most was The real world experience. Some things must be experienced rather than studied. For that reason I feel much more prepared to graduate and enter the work force.

What I liked
I enjoyed the projects and daily tasks I was given. I really liked working with the component test group and being able to help run the tests. My manager was really hands on with interns and was helpful in ensuring I had a good experience there. My whole team was very welcoming.
What I wish was different
There were some days where I had less to do than others. I prefer to keep busy than to not have much to do.
Advice
I was lucky enough to some how be granted an interim security clearance and this enabled me to work on real projects with my team.

My friends, and my team was an amazing team of capable intelligent software developers
What I wish was different
Inconsistency - some interns got paid to go to intern events and I did not and was expected to make up hours despite the events being mandatory
Slow - it took them 2 weeks to get Visual Studio on my computer, they took 2 weeks for my laptop, everything needs to be approved and is ultra slow
They either overworked or didn't have any work for Interns
Advice
Work there for the experience and to learn about corporate life and get a little knowledge about defense, but if your not engineering they don't really value you so find a place that values you.

What I liked
It's a supportive and quiet environment. The work load is not too much and there's a lot of privileges given while working there. The pay was high for an internship and my co-workers/boss all cared about my career.
What I wish was different
I wish that there would be more software development and mentors in that field. Since this location has a small number of employees there wasn't anyone who could mentor me.
Advice
Apply to everything you can and shoot your shot. While in the job, get to know the people and the company there. If the company likes you and hired you, there is probably a offer awaiting at the end. Don't be afraid to ask for help and don't be afraid to ask about your future in the company if you like it there. That would be a talk you'll have with your manager/boss.
